Gritty City Map

The City Hub is the semi-open non-linear section of the City that Garrett is able to traverse and explore in-between the main story missions. Consisting primarily of the Stonemarket and South Quarter districts, the Hub is rife with opportunities for Garrett to ply his trade and line his pockets, ranging from stealing various valuables to performing profitable jobs for Basso, Ector and Vittori.

Objectives[]

  • Multiple story-related objectives
  • Basso's jobs
    • 25 small-scale objectives, usually involving the theft of a specific, unique item. Apart from the Loot gained during the course of executing the job, each will provide a small reward for completion (typically 50G). There are three which provide no reward and two of these are introductions to two other clients Ector and Vittori who themselves have several jobs to give you. The third of these is 'Taking a Fence' which feels like an oversight/error in the code as it is the only one.

Loot[]

Main article: The City Hub/Lootlist

Unfortunately this is not a straight forward answer. If you collect all the Loot items from the various locations around the city and perform absolutely no PICK POCKET activity you will get the following result:

397/398 items, totaling 3886G.

Unfortunately the game tracks the value of ALL Loot Stolen and this includes purses lifted by Pick Pocket. The number of times the Pick Pocket activity is performed while wandering around the City is tracked and counted separately from Loot items but the value of the purses lifted are added to the Stolen Loot tally. Purses have, of course, different amounts in them; typically 5G, 7G, or 12G but occasionally 2G, 3G, and 15G. The total given above does not include any purses Garrett lifts during the course of his wanderings. If that were not confusing enough, the Citizens, Guards and Graven respawn periodically and while sometimes they are predictable (for instance after completion of a Mission), they also respawn after map transitions which makes an accurate count impossible as you can hop around the map indefinitely forcing respawn after respawn and creating more and more opportunities to Pick Pocket purses from these hapless individuals. Typically I will add approximately another 700G from pick pocketing by taking advantage of Pick Pocket opportunities when they occur and without being too silly about it.

Also, almost all Collectibles have a zero value as far as Loot is concerned however a couple buck this trend and will add to the Value Stolen tally. As far as the City Hub is concerned there is only one to be aware of and this can only be accessed after Chapter 5 but you will most likely get to it after Chapter 6.

  • Solving the Bait Switch puzzle will give you access to the Golden Keep in Ector's Emporium. This is a Unique Loot item but unlike most others this one will also increment your Value Stolen by 200G.

If you have completed this puzzle and obtained the Golden Keep and have performed absolutely no PICK POCKET activity your result will be:

397/398 items, totaling 4086G.

There is more! Similar to Collectibles having zero value you may also have noticed something strange about the side missions or jobs that Basso gives you. There are 25 of these in total and most of them require you to retrieve (steal) a particular object from someone/somewhere in the city. These items are counted as Loot items and increment the Loot count (by 1) BUT they actually have zero value and therefore add nothing to the value of your Stolen Loot tally. These jobs do reward you 50G for their completion though and typically this will flash up on your screen when you take the Loot item you have been tasked to retrieve so it may look like the Loot item has a value. It does not. You will get the reward as cash and it will add to the gold you have to spend on equipment, supplies, trinkets and upgrades but it will not add to the value of your stolen loot.

Now, a final note on the number of Loot items. Many people on forums etc. have questioned the total of 398 and people get stuck on either 397 or occasionally 396. There does seem to be a missing item or glitch/bug as no-one has managed to find that elusive 398th item of Loot. One theory is that there is a missing location. You will find a Smuggler's Map: Eel's End through a vent in Muddler's Row in a SECRET AREA which seems to indicate that there are some switches in the location(s) shown. To date no-one has been able to find these switches (including yours truly) and the consensus of opinion is that this piece of development did not make the final cut for whatever reason. If leaving the final tally as 397/398 Loot items really upsets you - there is a potential glitch/exploit you can use to even things out involving Jeb Choke and he is also the reason some people occasionally also get stuck on 396.

You will have heard about this charming fellow when skulking around the city and specifically the area(s) around Eel's End. He is the one who cut some woman's finger off with a pair of scissors to get at her ring - nice! Well...one of Basso's Jobs (The Rule of Thumb) available after Chapter 6 is to steal the Thief-Tally Scissors from Jeb Choke. If you go to his hideout, marked on the map as the objective location for this job, you will find the reprobate and there are a few other items of Loot about the place as well. Now, in the majority of cases people will knock Jeb Choke out with a take down because his patrol pattern and the shape of the room means there are no totally safe places to hide and it is an exercise in patience to get the timing of movements down so you can avoid him while collecting all the loot. If you do manage to get your movements synchronized you can Pick Pocket him and take the scissors that way. Apart from being a painful exercise in patience you will find that taking the Thief-Tally Scissors in this way WILL NOT INCREMENT YOUR LOOT ITEM COUNT! In addition, I don't think the next exploit/glitch will work either (but it is a pain to check as you have to complete the game all the way through past Chapter 6 1to confirm!) That is how you get stuck on 396/398 and I remember it nearly drove me nuts on the first play through as I had to go back and check that I had found every single one of the other 396 Loot items! (That probably tells you something about my -ism traits! Hahaha!) If you do knock Jeb Choke out with a Takedown and pick the Thief-Tally Scissors up off his unconscious body you will find that the scissors are a quest item so their value will be zero but they WILL INCREMENT your Loot item count. So, if you do this you will end up with the 397/398 Loot item count.

Now, the additional glitch/exploit. Having knocked him out you will find that he respawns similar to the patrolling Guards and Graven elsewhere on the map! When he does he will have ANOTHER PAIR OF SCISSORS. These ones will not register as quest items and you can go knock him out again, increment your Loot item count AND get an extra 50G added to your Value of Stolen Goods. So, when you do the Basso Job (The Rule of Thumb) remember to knock Jeb Choke out with a takedown, leave and do a few other jobs around the city (for Basso, Ector and Vittori if you have not already done them all) and revisit Jeb a bit later to find that he is back on his feet and has another pair of scissors for you to obtain. If you want to check it out...yes...he will respawn again and again indefinitely if you keep knocking him out so you can increase your tally above the 398 so this is definitely a glitch in the programming! But if you want to just even out your score at 398, knock him out first with a Takedown and then once more. Each subsequent visit to Jeb Choke will increment your Loot item count by 1 and this time the Scissors WILL have a value and add an extra 50G to the value of your Stolen Loot om each revisit.

Note: If anyone cares to check, I think that once you Pick his Pocket he either won't respawn or if he does he will not have any scissors. Once you know the answer you can update this page!

So there you have it. If you want to get to the 398 count simply knock Jeb out with a take down and then revisit him just once and your final tally will be:

398/398 items, totaling 4136G - again assume you have done absolutely no Pick Pocket activity and you have obtained the Golden Keep.

With Pick Pocket activity thrown in you should expect your Value Stolen to be around the 4800-4900G mark (including the Golden Keep) assuming you are taking advantage of Pick Pocket opportunities when they occur and not being too over-zealous about it.
